Unexpected Turn of Events

Some new fused flowers were added to our garden sculpture recently.
It's the last day of July, and I'm reflecting on the events of the last two months. We slowed down considerably in the Studio towards the middle of the month of June, not because we wanted to, but because we had to. Health problems have caught up with the two of us this year, and ended up putting one of us in the Hospital. We were just wrapping up some big projects around the property in June, along with some glass orders heading to our Local Museum of Idaho, when Russ experienced uncomfortable symptoms related to his heart. Sure enough, when he checked in to the hospital, they told him he was having a heart attack right then and there. So, obviously all things came to a complete stop for a while. All our energies were poured into Russ recovering. The staff at the local hospital were excellent caretakers of my guy for a few days. I am so thankful for their professional care. We were very lucky to catch this issue before it caused more damage.
It didn't take that Superman of mine long to recover from his health scare. As luck would have it, he got to the hospital in time and only one artery was in need of a stint. He is very fortunate to have come away from that harrowing experience a little more for the wiser, and is learning to take it a little easier these days. We are taking more time to enjoy the summer days, as the big projects are behind us, thankfully.  Relaxing in the mountains became a top priority in July.  Pictured below are some of the pieces that were created back in June before all things came to a stop.
Glass enamels were the medium for this piece, before the fish is fired in the kiln.
This fused glass piece can be seen at the Museum of Idaho.

Taking the time to enjoy a beautiful Idaho Sunset...it's medicine!
We got away to the Tetons the month of July. Very therapeutic.
Beautiful babbling Brook.
Enjoying the balloon races at the Tetons in July.
The Aspen Grove we camped in, might just be inspiration for new Art in the future.
We also were lucky enough to enjoy the company of all 4 of our sons and their families this month. We took advantage of that opportunity to update long overdue family pictures, and celebrate the birthdays of our 2 youngest granddaughters. What a treat!

Now we are slowly getting back to "normal" and finishing up a few orders, along with another batch of wildlife heading to Yellowstone Park Stores again. They had such a busy year, they ordered from us twice! (Good thing Russ is on the mend now.)
And finally, yesterday we remembered a very special woman in both our lives. Russ' Mom passed away 4 years ago. She loved butterflies, and wouldn't you know, one landed for us just in time to help us remember the beauty of her soul. One thing life teaches you as you age, slow down and enjoy the simple things, they really seem to help when life gives you unexpected turns and struggles. If you look hard enough, you can see beauty through the pain.

February was Fierce

February started out nice enough....we had quite a few snowstorms this month and played outside in the white powder with our furry friends. We also celebrated a couple of birthdays in the family, including our youngest grandson turning 1 earlier this month. But midway through the month we both came down hard with the Crud! It hit us something fierce! It especially hit Russ hard, so our annual Valentine rosebud lessons had to be rearranged until he got to feeling better. Today is the last day of the month and he's still not quite 100 percent. This is the first year I can remember whole school districts shutting down because of that nasty bug spreading all throughout our valley. I'm glad we are on the mend now.

Our 5th grandchild turned 1 year old this month.
Before Russ got sick, he had time to create a few new fused projects, including the wall art below...a callalily scene for our daughter-in-law, who celebrated the big 30 year mark this month. He used stand-offs to hang it in her home. It took multiple firings in the big kiln.

A large order of blown glass hearts and many roses were also worked on and shipped out this month, in between each of us dealing with fevers and coughs and sniffles.

Another fused scene (pictured below) completed this month represented the many chickadees that come to our property in winter in search of food. It can also be used as wall art and is for sale in our Studio.

We had a request at the end of the month for these medallions to go along with a book that a local author had written. We were barely able to squeeze this order in, after dealing with the sickies for weeks on end!

Now that we have just about conquered the Crud, we are really looking forward to warmer weather and Spring flowers blooming, akin to our glass tulips pictured below. Believe me, we are so done with "Cabin Fever"!

May Musings

The month of May has given us a chance to get creative with new glass projects around our property, as this time of the year Internet orders tend to slow down, giving us time to hatch new ideas. And of course, when one has time to collect one's thoughts, there is much creative musing that goes on in an Artist's brain. So in May those musings were turned into the latest creations. The first few visuals show the beginning process of fusing glass in the kiln, and then a couple videos of the final projects place around the yard. I like to think Russ might have channeled a bit of the great glass artist "Chihuly" with these florals that now adorn our pondscape. But of course, he is an artist in his own right, just not quite as famous.
Colorful scraps of glass were fused into flowers and leaves for a new garden sculpture.
Russ plucked a rhubarb leaf out of the garden and fused float glass over the top of it.
The following videos are short clips of  the finished pieces adorning our pond area, and a small waterfall in our front porch area. (Russ blew and sculpted a whimsical glass frog and added it to the fused leaf project.)

The backyard bar area needed a face lift, so here is a sneek peak of the new "Cheers" insert. It was sandblasted on float glass, which was cut to fit the space. We still have some fine tuning to do on this one, but thought I would share the work in progress.

We managed to break away from all the Spring clean-up work and projects in the yard, to enjoy Russ' new kayaks he got for his birthday. We enjoyed a weekend in the mountains with family and got good use out of the fun kayaks. So that about wraps it up for the month of May's activities. Until next time, work hard, play hard. A good motto to live by.
